When retailers talk about “the next big thing” they are referring to the next popular line which brings customers into their stores repeatedly and generates blockbuster sales and profits; ie beanie babies, webkinz.
I have been an independent retailer for 15 years. For the last 8 years I’ve written a blog on and off for my fellow retailers called Sylvia’s Tip of the Day. I like to educate others on what I’m pretty good at, trends, keeping up with them, and translating them. Trends in color, looks/designs, and how to get your customers on board .
Fashion and apparel have been making its way into the independent gift retailer stores for quite a while. The shift in fashion and away from collectibles has been ...

Swing by Sylvia
Well that was the softest launch in the history of new company launches! I’ve been working on Swing for over two years and if it were up to me it would launch next year. I am a perfectionist. UGH. My accountant and countless friends urged me to suck it up and go with it. I’m nervous and excited at the same time.
Just to take you back a couple of years ago… I can’t sew, draw or make patterns to save my life. It turns out with the power of social media and the internet; you don’t need to in order to start your own apparel line. You just need a good idea. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I do.
Sometimes you meet people who inspire you and make you want to do ...

Good news, Emma taught me how to dance to The Cupid Shuffle. Yeah, it’s a big deal. Anyone who’s danced with me will happily agree. If you have, just nod your head. Wow ~ look at that cool girl dancing. SAID NO ONE!!! Except me. In my head I’m a professional dancer. I twirl and everything.
Music does that to me. It takes me away to imaginary places.
I bet you didn’t know that I can sing opera. Yes I can. Highest pitch I hit was in the shower. My bathroom’s too small, so you’ll have to take my word for it.
My playlist is as eccentric as MAC Cosmetics. One minute I’m singing Eclipse from Pink Floyd, to The Point of No Return from the...

Pinterest is for people who like pictures. Twitter is for people who like one liners, with hashtags. Wikipedia describes a hashtag as: "A hashtag is a word or an unspaced phrase prefixed with the hash character (or number sign), # , to form a label. It is a type of metadata tag."
Twitter help says: People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.
I use Twitter because 1) I love one liners; and 2) it just so happens that my brain only works one sentence at a time. A match made in heaven.
Today's tweets so far mention my distaste for potato salad and a rodent named Phil.

Did you know that Pantone chooses a "color of the year"? They come up with this color based on fashion shows and what the higher end designers are using for their color palettes. This year's color is Radiant Orchid, which is basically a fancy name for Fuschia. It's a very pretty color, don't get me wrong. BUT...
Do you know what is trending right now for "the" color of Spring? Yup, last year's color of the year, Emerald Green! If you are asking yourself what happened to Radiant Orchid...join the club!
The fashion magazines are showing emerald green with pastels and especially navy for a crisp clean look. I happen to like it. I'm the person who buys her spring pocketbook...

A SHORT STORY ~ Pinterest Was Made For Me by Sylvia Killion.
For those who haven't joined Pinterest, let me tell you what you are missing! As a founding member of the "We Ain't Reading Group", this not so new pinning board (Pinterest) was created by someone who obviously belongs to the same group! This is the place you go when you want to get ideas on how to eat, dress, throw a party, stay on trend, etc. etc. and do it with pictures!
You search for let's say "kitchens" and pin the pictures you like on your own bulletin board. When you do redo your kitchen, you will have lots of ideas of what you like and this will help you design your own! It's so easy to use its crazy and I'm thoroughly hooked on.........

I've deemed this an easy dress day. You know when you're tired of your winter clothes and it's only January...ugh. It's cold out...ugh.
Today I have dark jeans and a lighter button down jean top with an Elizabeth and James wool sweater over it. (the runway section of the norwell tjmaxx is to be watched closely). It's one of those days that I am going to work and have to look somewhat okay but I just don't feel like putting an outfit together. A forever fail safe look is jean on jean. You cannot do it wrong. If you're sassy add a blingy, fun belt. If you're cold, add a sweater and scarf. Because its 11 degrees here, I still have my shearling boots on. Those will be around for a ...
